Microsoft Office How-to: Counting Incomplete Entries in Excel

Thanks to the Office Letter for this tip: If you enter massive amounts of data into a worksheet, here's as easy way to make sure you haven't skipped any cells by accident. To know at a glance when all the cells are filled in, use the COUNTBLANK function, which returns the number of blank (empty) cells in a given range. Rather than use that function alone in a single cell, combine it with text to make a more meaningful message. For example, define cell A1 as:

="Incomplete cells: " & COUNTBLANK(A3:H50)

where A3:H50 is the range of cells you're checking. The ampersand acts to concatenate two or more values. You have finished entering data when the cell reads:

Incomplete cells: 0

Note that there's a space after "Incomplete cells:" so there is at least one space between the text and the value.

Support Time for Windows 2000 is Running Out

If you're still using Windows 2000 (client or server), you need to be aware that Microsoft plans to phase out mainstream support for these operating systems on June 30th of this year. What does that mean? Microsoft will still support the OS, but for a fee. You'll still get security fixes free, but you have to pay for non-security fixes. There is expected to be a security "rollup" update released this summer, as well. Read more here: Click Here

Better Display Results in Bad Picture

QUESTION:
I bought a laptop with the latest and greatest display - at least it's supposed to be. Everything looked good until I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP.
Now the text is hardly readable. Help! What happened?
Submitted by: Heather S

ANSWER:
If your laptop's display is one of the new high-DPI (dots per inch) screens with a resolution higher than 96 DPI, you might need to change the DPI setting in order to get it to display properly. Here's how:

  1. Right click an empty spot on the desktop and select Properties, or click Start | Control Panel and click the Display applet.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. On the General tab, in the DPI Settings dropdown box, select Large size (for 120 DPI) or Custom setting (for higher DPI). In the Custom dialog box, drag the slider to configure the setting to match your laptop's monitor.
  5. Click OK twice to exit the dialog box.
